Super Temporary Competition Entry (2020) hosted by the AIA Huron Valley

Awarded Honorable Mention

From the competition brief:

About the competition

“Design and install a temporary glowing gateway installation for the annual FoolMoon celebration in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This installation is meant to be a beacon for the event at the entry point to the festivities. In the spirit of the FoolMoon night, the installation must be illuminated in some way. Consider design and fabrication based on a temporary installation schedule and event. A super temporary installation should be quick to assemble and create an exciting environment for everyone.”

About FoolMoon

“FoolMoon is the nighttime kick-off event to the FOOL-ish weekend. In the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market in Kerrytown, everyone and anyone is invited to gather in the streets to shake off those cold gray winters. The skyline will be filled with luminaries, interactive installations, laser shows, a beer tent, DJ’s raised into the air, and live dance performances. A parade of home made luminaries will move through Downtown Ann Arbor and finish at the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market. This year’s theme will be a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.”

After spending a good amount of time looking around for inspiration I digitally collaged the handful I was most attached to. Then began working my way through which proposals were the most feasible and which best fulfilled the competition prompt. Some were hard to say goodbye to but I just couldn’t make them work…

Below are a few inspiration images and details of some materials I considered and decided to use in the proposed construction. I thought these dunnage bags from ULine were amazing (hence the project name) but ultimately couldn’t get them to satisfy both the requirement of being environmentally conscious and illuminated. I kept with their form and found another way to build the creatures.
